Winter Goddess

Winter Goddess Challenge

Welcome everyone! Today I am hosting our second to last challenge of the year - this challenge focuses on the circle of life - renewal and regeneration expressed through the Goddess of Winter.  We want you to show us how you view this earthly process of the uniqueness of life - the cyclical interconnectedness of all things expressed through the role the Goddess of Winter plays in this magnificent process. You may use any medium to make your entry including digital - if that should strike your fancy. Share with us your expression of this magical and mystical portion of the circle of the year.

Winter Solstice has just passed. A time of year in which we welcome the Goddess of Winter with open hearts and arms along with all her myths and rituals. Albeit these rituals vary from culture to culture but none-the-less are recognized by all.

It is a time of year that we celebrate the spirit of regeneration and renewal through age old rituals of personal renewal, thoughts and prayers for world peace and a coming together to honor our family and friends.

We celebrate with lights to hold at bay the darkness of the lengthened nights which we once deeply feared; greenery to remind ourselves of the lush greens of the past and future springs and summers; feasting and gift giving, merriment and singing of songs to remind us that again it will be warm and green in the seasons to come.

Lastly, that all of life is cyclical continually contributing to the great circle of life of which the Goddess of Winter plays but a part. We are reminded of the interconnectedness of life from one season to the next through the Great Circle of Life. (paraphrased from Circle Sanctuary)

We look forward as always to your wonderfully diverse creativity and imaginations. Remember to link up you project in the Mr. Linky below so we all can visit one another and compliment one another's beautiful creations!

Weekly challenge December 17 (Victorian)

The Victorian Era

Queen Victoria (1819-1901) was the first English monarch to see
her name given to the period of her reign whilst still living.
Her reign of 63 years and seven months (which is longer than that of any
other British monarch and the longest of any female monarch in history)
is known as the Victorian era. She inherited the throne at the age of 18,
after her father's three older brothers had all died
without surviving legitimate children.

Architecture was elaborate,

the institution of afternoon tea became popular,

industrial progress and
colonial expansion were happening . . .

it was an era of ostentation . . .

excessively romantic but a time of fastidious morals.

I love to visit neighborhoods with Victorian architecture.

The challenge this week is to create something with Victorian flavor!

Isn't it fun to wander through a thrift shop
and find some fabulous jewelry to upcycle?

How gorgeous is this butterfly?

Use a holiday theme or not.
A Victorian Christmas always sounds intriguing, warm, and cozy to me!

Not all was ostentatious upper class living, however, in Victorian times.
There was a sharp difference between rich and poor.
Charles Dickens was a fierce critic of the poverty and
social stratification of Victorian society. The themes run through
his writings, like Oliver Twist and A Christmas Carol.

Don't forget that Steampunk is described as
“Victorian science fiction” according to TOR.COM.
“Steampunk” references the Victorian time period and aesthetic,
the industrialized 19th century. It uses this existing technology
and structure to imagine an even more advanced 19th century.

If steampunk is your favorite, let's see it!

So on with the challenge!
Here's a slight twist on Inspiration Avenue's weekly challenge:

Creative time is sometimes short during the holidays, so feel free to
take this Victorian fashion image and use it to create your entry.

I can see it dressed up for the holidays, collaged or altered digitally,
colored, cut out, or whatever takes your fancy!
Use this image, or create your own bit of Victoriana
the choice is yours.

(Can you imagine having to spend the day
bundled up in all that fabric?)

Leave the link to your entry with Mr. Linky below
by December 23 at noon eastern time.
Please link back to Inspiration Avenue as well!

Happy creating!

12 Days of Christmas

a partridge in a pear tree.

On the second day of Christmas, my true love gave to me,
two turtle doves...

On the third day of Christmas, my true love gave to me,
three French hens...

On the fourth day of Christmas, my true love gave to me,
four calling birds...

On the fifth, sixth, seventh, and eighth days of Christmas, my true love gave to me,
five golden rings, six geese a laying, seven swans a swimming, eight maids a milking...

On the ninth, tenth, and eleventh days of Christmas, my true love gave to me,
nine ladies dancing, ten lords a leaping, eleven pipers piping...

On the twelfth day of Christmas, my true love gave to me,
twelve drummers drumming...

Here at Inspiration Avenue, we thought it might be fun to have a challenge about the 12 Days of Christmas.   The images of the gifts were chosen from items in Etsy Shops.  I had trouble just choosing a few.

There are lots of ideas about the origin of the song, and even an urban legend telling that Catholics used the song to hide teachings in the bible, back when it was a crime to be Catholic.  You can read about the history and meaning of each of the gifts HERE

This challenge can be interpreted however you want.  You can make an image about the literal 12 Days of Christmas song, focus on just a portion of the title, such as the number 12, or go off on a tangent according to the whims of your muse.  We hope you just have fun with it.  If you need some inspiration, listen to the song sung by children here

The deadline is Sunday, December 16 at noon Eastern time.  Leave a thumbnail of your entry with our Mr. Linky gadget and a comment in the comments section.  Then have fun hopping around and seeing the other entries.    Sorry I can't give you twelve days for this one!

Angels on my mind . . .

Morning everyone, Beth here to introduce
this week's new challenge entitled
Long ago I realized I actually had a guardian angel... it was the only logical explanation for some of the wonderful doors that suddenly opened to me as well as a few situations that I miraculously survived.

Keep in mind that this is in no way intended to be religious pursey;
I do not follow an organized religion rather preferring to follow my own way that is a combination of many paths leading to a mindful
and spiritual existence.
Recently the realization that I had never painted my guardian angel struck me with the challenge back in October entitled "Orange".  I thought this would be a wonderful challenge particularly given the holiday season we have just officially ushered in.
Now I know angels mean different things to different people so in this challenge I ask that you create a piece of art depicting your angel be it your guardian or other.

So, get out those art supplies and get creating... be it a greeting card, a tag, a painted or collaged canvas or even an assemblage... as always your imagination is your only limitation.

Submissions are due by noon (eastern time)
on December 2. Leave your link with Mr. Linky below.

Don't forget to link your art so we can all pop over to
each other's blogs for an angelic visit!
